In data centers, surplus heat is primarily generated by IT equipment (e.g. servers) as part of data center operation. With Danfoss' Heat Recovery Unit (HRU), recovering excess heat in a data center is much simpler than it may sound. This modular system is a cost-effective solution, that ensure both a lower carbon footprint and a fast ROI.
With an HRU unit you get a tailored system with all necessary components based on a 3D model. It includes a heating substation with accumulation tanks that is ready for use, and an automatic controller ECL which accommodates external communication.
Designed as a floor station and delivered in one piece that can be split into three parts, the HRU is easy to transport and install. Moreover, the layout makes it simple to prepare the data center building with connection piping before the HRU is delivered.
Motorized control valves ensure perfect control and efficiency for every building and application. Danfoss Motorized Control Valves (MCV) ensure stable and accurate control of water, glycol mixtures and steam.
Ball valves enable on/off control of the building system connection. They create the sectioning of the system that enables service, maintenance, and repairs to be carried out in sections, without shutting down or emptying the whole system.

Learn how Edinburgh is reducing its carbon footprint with Danfoss technology. In line with the zero-waste objectives of the Scottish government, the treatment of non-recyclable urban waste contributes to eliminating landfills whilst generating electricity and heat. Equipped with high-efficiency VACON® NXP drives, the process generates heat enough to supply 25,000 households.
By recycling heat from its refrigeration system, a Danish supermarket chain reduced its annual heat bill for one of its buildings by 89.7% and its CO₂ footprint by 6.7 tons a year. Instead of letting the waste heat simply dissipate into the air, as most supermarket buildings still do, a Danfoss Heat Recovery Unit (HRU) now recycles it to heat the store’s 1,900 m2 and provide plenty of hot tap water year-round.
