How does a VFD work on a pump?
A variable frequency drive (VFD) works by controlling the speed of a pump. Instead of running the pump at a constant full speed, the VFD adjusts the speed of the pump to maintain flow or pressure. By meeting actual system demand, VFDs for pumps can:
- Save significant energy: Reducing pump speed by just 20% can lead to energy savings of up to 50%
- Reduce mechanical wear: Soft starting and stopping reduces water hammer and mechanical stress on pipes, valves, and the pump itself
- Improve process control: Maintain constant pressure, flow, or water level with high precision
