Early detection, lasting protection: Sine-wave filter monitoring

Monday, September 1, 2025

Danfoss is proud to announce the expansion of integrated condition-based monitoring (CBM) capabilities of its premium VLT® drives to include sine-wave filter monitoring. This enhancement provides customers with new insights into equipment health and elevates proactive maintenance strategies.

CBM is an embedded drive software function that leverages sensor data and edge computing to continuously monitor the performance of critical components. By detecting deviations between actual and baseline values, VLT® drives can identify potential issues early, helping customers to protect their equipment for longer service life.
The enhanced CBM functionality supervises key conditions, providing fast and early fault detection with user notifications:

  • Stator winding
  • Vibration (Unbalance, looseness & misalignment, Mechanical resonance, Bearing condition)
  • Load envelope (Friction in pump, fouling, sanding, broken impeller)
  • Cavitation monitoring
  • The newest: Sine-wave filter monitoring

Sine-wave filter monitoring protects critical applications

Now, a key addition to integrated CBM supervision is an advanced sine-wave filter monitoring function. This is especially relevant for applications using capacitors within sine-wave filters. Capacitors have a defined end-of-life, characterized by irreversible changes in their internal material structure. As these capacitors approach end-of-life, they can pose risks to the installation due to potential material degradation. After an initial baseline measurement, the advanced control algorithm measures the condition of capacitors in the sine-wave filters every two days. If a trigger point is exceeded, a warning or alarm alerts staff so they can act quickly to replace capacitors. The sine-wave filter monitoring system continuously tracks and acts on the capacitance within sine-wave filters, offering significant benefits:

Proactive maintenance: Timely notifications enable staff to take proactive measures, preventing sine-wave filter breakdowns and mitigating potential hazards

Simplified installation: No external sensors are required, simplifying installation and maintenance, reducing both time and cost

Seamless integration: Easy commissioning in new installations and easy retrofit into existing sine-wave filter setups ensures operational reliability

Retrofittable: The sine-wave filter monitoring function can be retrofitted to existing installations, to monitor sine-wave filters already installed

Our enhanced condition-based monitoring capabilities, including sine-wave filter monitoring, empower our customers to move from reactive to proactive maintenance strategies. By detecting potential issues early, we help them minimize downtime, reduce maintenance costs, and improve the overall reliability of their operations

The applications which will benefit most from the sine-wave filter monitoring function are typically in these scenarios where sine-wave filters are used to improve power quality:

  • Long cable lengths: sine-wave filters reduce reflected waves and voltage overshoot, protecting motor insulation - for example in water management
  • Retrofit applications: sine-wave filters enable use of modern VFDs with older motors by smoothing voltage waveforms
  • Sensitive environments: sine-wave filters minimize EMI in hospitals, labs, and broadcast studios - for example in HVAC/R applications
  • High-performance: since-wave filters improve motor control in servo drives and high-speed spindles by reducing torque ripple
  • Reduced insulation motors: sine-wave filters prevent premature failure in motors with reduced insulation
  • Multiple motors: sine-wave filters ensure clean sinusoidal voltage for every motor connected to a single drive
  • Specific motor types:  sine-wave filters protect motors with winding weaknesses or high-frequency operation
