Flex-Steer™ - Steer-by-wire for maximum design flexibility and visibility

Flex-Steer

What if removing the steering column gave you more flexibility?

Flex-Steer™ provides additional cabin space for greater comfort and enhanced machine layout.

Rethink your vision

Fail-safe steering is a critical requirement on mobile machines. We have made it easy for you to fulfill it by integrating safety functionality in the design of our intelligent steering subsystem. Steer-by-wire technology allows you to completely rethink operator stations - enabling far greater design flexibility both in the cab and on the vehicle. The Flex-Steer™ subsystem is designed to suit a wide range of applications - for both new vehicles and the existing market. The Flex-Steer™ steer-by-wire technology also allows for flexible operator stations, such as those used on asphalt compactors where the workstation is rotated 180˚.

Flex-Steer™ controls process operator input into proper command signals, customizable for various levels of operator experience. This ensures maximum productivity from every operator.
Inexperienced operators tend to make quick, exaggerated joystick movements. With conventional controls, this can cause stalling or lead to erratic, unproductive machine behavior. Working with engineers at our global Application Development Centers, you can develop Steer-by-wire controls. These can process novice operator input into proper command signals. So, even too-fast, too-far steering movements deliver smoother, more productive results.

Too many turns. Too little vision. Too much pain.

Traditional steering means compromises at every level.

  • Four full turns, lock-to-lock.
  • Reduced design freedom and constrained cabin integration.
  • For you, it means complex layouts and limited flexibility.

For operators, it means fatigue and reduced control.

From complexity to clarity: fewer components, fewer risks. Faster time-to-market.

Danfoss Flex-Steer™ eliminates the steering column. Operators steer with a joystick or e-wheel. Fewer movements. Fewer errors. Faster response.

Backed by muscles and motion data, built by facts.

Aalborg University conducted a controlled study measuring muscles effort, steering time, and precision across different input methods.
Backed by science
Aalborg University’s controlled study revealed that using Flex-Steer™ electric steering input devices reduces muscles effort by 65% compared to traditional steering wheels. By minimizing physical strain, operators experience improved comfort and reduced fatigue during repeated and long tasks.
Steering certified ISO25119
The same study measured steering performance across different input methods and found a 6% increase in steering task efficiency with Danfoss electric steering input devices. The result: smoother operations and measurable productivity gains in demanding applications.
