Danfoss highlights energy-efficient industrial wastewater treatment and seawater reverse osmosis solutions at Aquatech 2025
In 2025, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates that 1.8 billion people will likely face absolute water scarcity, and that two-thirds of the global population will experience water stress. High-pressure membrane processes such as seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) for desalination, and water reuse applications, are crucial to addressing the world’s freshwater shortage. To ensure an adequate water supply while protecting the environment, the water industry must adopt energy-efficient technologies that make these water treatment processes environmentally and financially sustainable.
Danfoss is committed to making desalination and wastewater treatment processes more energy efficient. At Aquatech 2025, our experts will showcase our four core technologies for the water industry:
- High-pressure APP pumps optimized for land-based, off-shore and marine SWRO, as well as ZLD and brine concentration applications. The Danfoss booth will also feature the award-winning ceramic APP pump, recipient of the Water Technology Idol at the 2024 Global Water Summit, and the Miriam Balaban Award at Euromed 2024.
- iSave® energy recovery devices (ERDs) for high-pressure membrane applications. The iSave features an innovative 3-in-1 design that integrates a pressure exchanger, booster pump and motor. It recovers 94% of the high-pressure energy that would otherwise be wasted during the process, resulting in up to 60% energy savings for plant operators.
- AC Drives, including the VLT AQUA Drive for AC-motor-driven water and wastewater applications. These intelligent frequency converters can help you with condition-based maintenance. Including cavitation detection and warnings in case of imbalance, vibrations or a problem in the motor windings, with live-demo.
- Pressure sensors and fluid control devices, such as the DST P40I pressure transmitter made of Titanium and with ceramic pressure sensing element for desalination systems, seawater cooling and chemical processing.
These technologies combine into highly efficient, reliable water purification solutions that return energy savings of up to 65% compared to traditional centrifugal pump systems without ERDs and drives.
Energy-efficient water solutions for emergency situations
Danfoss will also showcase how its solutions are ideal for containerized SWRO plants that can provide fresh water in emergency situations. This unique combination of an APP high-pressure pump, iSave® ERD and VLT AQUA Drive can fit inside of a 40-ft container, offering a plug-and-play solution that authorities can quickly deploy.
Over the past 20 years, our pumps have become the standard for OEMs in the containerized reverse osmosis market sector, and we’ve supplied our products to hundreds of container systems around the world. Today, OEMs using our products can produce containers with a freshwater flow production of up to 3000 m3/day per container, with an efficiency around 2 kWh/m3. We look forward to demonstrating our products’ compactness, flexibility and reliability at this year’s Aquatech exhibition.
