The first museum adopting maglev oil-free air conditioning technology in China
At Shouyi Square in Wuhan, the architecture with a triangle exterior wall that looks like an arrowhead breaking through the soil is very eye-catching. In addition, the red exterior wall has a naturally worn texture and together with the black base and the architectural style, it highlights a thick and far-reaching historic atmosphere. It is Wuhan Xinhai Revolution Museum (new hall), which was completed in 2011. Along with the old location of site of the Military Government of the Wuchang Uprising during Xinhai Revolution (the Red Building) and the bronze statue of Mr. Sun Yat-sen, it has become a cultural symbol of Wuhan Shouyi Square.
Through reading the introduction about the design of the Xinhai Revolution Museum, one can easily find that the spirit of Xinhai Revolution and the first revolt, which is "Lead the forefront, be the pioneer, seek for innovation and change", directed the project. And the project resorts to many new technologies in aspects of exterior wall, structure, digital design and air conditioning system for the building. That is how the first museum in China that adopts maglev oil-free air conditioning technology came into being. It opened up a new era of the central air conditioning system in Chinese museums in aspects of high energy efficiency, superior low noise , low repair and maintenance cost, and space saving.
The central air conditioning system of the museum is run by two McQuay maglev water-cooled chillers WMC 250D for summer cooling, with a total of 500tons(1800KW) cooling capacity. Each machine is equipped with two Danfoss Turbocor magnetic- bearing oil-free inverter compressors TT400.

The museum uses the narrative approach according to space. By the language of architectural design it narrates the darkness before the Xinhai Revolution, hardship in the revolution development, the breakup in the climax of the revolution and the glories in the peak of the revolution to the visitors. The crossover of vertical and horizontal space in a scattered order, the introduction of natural light and the replicated scenario guide the tourists to complete a soul trip from uproar to silence to deliberation and finally reach distillation.
To ensure the actual implement of the design concept, the quiet operation of the central air conditioning units becomes important. During the construction, the location of the cooling station is close to the exhibition area on B1 floor and the space for the chiller is very limited. Therefore, there's a stricter standard on the sound level, vibration and machine size on the chiller. Fortunately, the maglev oil-free chiller of McQuay adopted by the museum only had a sound level around 73 dba, which helped the electrical department of the construction project easily meet the requirement of "silent space for story-telling" without having the extra effort in sound insulation and noise reduction.
The Xinhai Revolution Museum has exclusive requirements on the central air conditioning system. The museum has exhibition area, antique storeroom, business workspace, office area, tourist service area, outdoor area and other parts; therefore, the cooling capacity, temperature and humidity requirements are different in various areas. The workload of the air conditioning system differs between the peak and normal period. Meanwhile in summer, concerning the day and night protection of museum collections, the indoor temperature shouldn't be higher than 26℃ and the air conditioner must run for 24 hours. Above all, energy saving is of the first importance in choosing the air conditioning system. The maglev oil-free chiller that is famous for part-load efficiency can fully give play to its strength in terms of efficient operation and energy savings.
According to the statistics from Wuhan McQuay, the maglev oil-free air conditioning system in Xinhai Revolution Museum runs for about 1800 hours annually and saves 39% of yearly energy consumption, which is about 39000kwh of electricity compared to the high-efficiency centrifuge chiller under the same brand. Besides, the oil-free design of the maglev chiller does away with the oil circuit maintenance and consequently, supposing a 20-year lifecycle, it saves 100,000 RMB of maintenance expense only in lubricating oil replacement.
