Danfoss Power Solutions' ED3 onboard charger named Electrification Technology of the Year

NORDBORG, Denmark – The Danfoss Editron ED3 onboard charger and electric power take-off was named Electrification Technology of the Year at the 2024 Power Progress Summit. At the event’s annual awards dinner, Danfoss Power Solutions was among seven companies recognized in nine award categories. The 2024 Summit — hosted by KHL Group, parent company of Power Progress and Power Progress International magazines — brought together attendees from across the industry to discuss the latest “Developments in Digitalization and Decarbonization.”

Typical electric vehicle (EV) onboard chargers provide 22 kilowatts of power. For a heavy-duty vehicle or machine using an AC charger, charging time could range from 15 to 18 hours — far too long for overnight charging. DC chargers can resolve this challenge, but they come at a cost. Procurement and installation of a DC charger can cost up to 10 times more than an AC charger. Multiply this across a vehicle fleet, and it quickly becomes a barrier to EV adoption.

The ability to rapidly charge with AC power is crucial to making the EV business case. At up to 44 kW, the Danfoss Editron ED3 onboard charger provides nearly double the charging power of the market standard, decreasing charging time and enabling overnight charging of heavy-duty vehicles using AC charging. By integrating an electric power take-off, the ED3 reduces complexity while providing space, weight, and cost savings.

“For the electric commercial vehicle market to really take off, we need to solve the charging infrastructure problem. This can’t be done quickly, so we’ve developed the ED3 to serve as a bridge component that enables battery charging overnight, at low cost,” said Eric Azeroual, Vice President, Sales Development and Portfolio, Editron division, Danfoss Power Solutions. “Recognitions like this demonstrate the industry agrees and sees the power and value of the Editron ED3 in commercial vehicle electrification. We’re grateful to the judges for the honor.”

The annual Power Progress Summit Awards honor industry innovation, excellence, and success in the engine and powertrain sector. Winners were selected by a panel of independent judges chosen for their extensive power industry knowledge.

In addition to the Power Progress Summit Award, the Editron ED3 onboard charger was also recognized in OEM Off-Highway magazine’s 2024 Top New Products awards program. ED3 was named the winner in the Electrical and Electronics category.
