Introducing the new DST GS-series compact gas sensors: Built for extreme conditions

Wednesday, September 17, 2025

The new DST GS gas sensors by Danfoss Sensing Solutions feature the company’s patented top-down inverted design in a slim, compact design with an IP66 rating, offering extra protection in extreme conditions.

The new DST GS gas sensors are designed to meet the market’s need for a compact gas sensor that offers extra protection from water and dust damage. The sensor’s enclosure has an IP66 rating, and the connector has an IP69K rating, the highest on the Ingress Protection scale. The GS-series also features Danfoss’ patented, top-down, inverted sensor design, which protects the sensor membrane from dust, oil and water spray and eliminates false dewpoint avoidance.

Laís de Oliveira-Röndahl, Product Manager at Danfoss Sensing Solutions, explains that the new GS compact gas sensors address two concrete pain points for OEMs designing HVACR systems for residential, transport and food retail applications. “First, there’s the challenge of designing a system that needs to fit in a limited space. The GS-series’ slim, compact design enables system builders to use it in smaller units, such as those used in transport refrigeration and air conditioning. Second, the sensor’s higher IP rating means it can withstand repeated washdown conditions without breaking down, which is useful for systems that require frequent, high-pressure washing.”

Reliable gas detection for residential and transport HVACR systems

The newest addition to Danfoss’ A2L gas sensing portfolio also satisfies OEM’s requirements for accuracy and reliability. The GS-series uses the same thermal conductivity technology as the standard Danfoss A2L gas sensors, enabling rapid, accurate leak detection over the full spectrum of temperature, humidity and pressure ranges. GS sensors also include built-in self-diagnostics and automated self-calibration, which minimize “silent” failures and reduce maintenance needs. “When we speak with our customers, they highlight the importance of having reliable sensors that they can install and count on to work as intended,” relates Laís de Oliveira-Röndahl. “Based on our extensive internal testing, the GS sensors work without field adjustments or re-zeroing for at least 15 years.” Danfoss has also developed the sensors to meet the industry safety requirement, UL 60335-2-89, for refrigeration equipment and UL 60335-2-40 for HVAC equipment.

Offering advanced gas leak detection technology to installations of all sizes

When it comes to residential, transport and food retail HVACR systems, flexibility is a crucial criterion for system builders, as the components they work with need to fit a variety of conditions. To accommodate as wide a range of installations as possible, the GS-series has a versatile design, suitable for applications using R454B, R32, R454A, R454C and R455A refrigerants. So, whatever the system requirements, OEMs can find an accurate A2L gas detection sensor.

We first introduced our A2L gas sensors with thermal conductivity technology in 2023. With its over 15-year lifetime, immunity to poisoning, rapid and accurate response time and reliable self-diagnostics, our sensors have already helped HVACR system builders design safer, more reliable installations. And now, we’re pleased to further enhance our sensors with an IP66-rated enclosure, IP69K-rated connector and a more compact design, so that our customers can provide reliable gas detection in the harshest application environments.
