Danfoss motion portfolio: Now with VLT® Multiaxis Servo Drive 520

Tuesday, September 16, 2025

Danfoss introduces the new-generation VLT® Multiaxis Servo Drive 520 (MSD 520), the latest addition to the VLT® FlexMotion™ servo portfolio. This innovative servo solution delivers advanced functional safety, efficiency, and seamless integration, to address the complex demands of modern motion control applications.

MSD 520 offers a range of useful benefits to machine builders:

1. Compact and optimized design
The MSD 520 represents a significant design evolution over its predecessor, the VLT® Multiaxis Servo Drive MSD 510.  By integrating the Decentral Access Module option into the VLT® Power Supply Module PSM 520, the system contains fewer separate modules, which reduces footprint, complexity, and installation effort.

2. Integrated advanced functional safety
The MSD 520 comes with built-in hardwired STO (Safe Torque Off) as standard. It also supports advanced safety functions via PROFIsafe and Functional Safety over EtherCAT (FSoE) fieldbuses. These features meet the safety level SIL 3 (IEC 61508), Pl e / CAT 3 (ISO 13849), enabling machine manufacturers to achieve high safety standards, operator protection, minimize risks, and reduce downtime.

3. Seamless system integration
Engineered for seamless integration with diverse modern automation environments such as Siemens, B&R and Beckhoff, it is easy for machine builders to integrate VLT® FlexMotion servo solution into their existing architectures with low complexity.

4. Flexible system architecture
Use the MSD 520 as a standalone central servo system or in combination with decentral products like the VLT® Integrated Servo Drive ISD® 520 and VLT® Decentral Servo Drive DSD 520. This flexibility allows machine builders to adapt the system architecture to specific application needs

5. Easy “Click and Lock” mounting
Installation of the modules is made easy with the “Click and Lock” concept. Modules are mounted securely with DC-link connection and auxiliary power supply through the backplate.

A flexible and modular concept allows machine builders to construct exactly the systems needed to meet specific application needs. The MSD 520 is built up of the following modules:

  • VLT® Power Supply Module PSM 520, which provides a centralized power supply up to 30 kW including the integrated Decentral Access Module (DAM)
  • VLT® Servo Drive Module SDM 521, available in two different frames to meet different power requirements. SDM 521 supports single axis applications
  • VLT® Servo Drive Module SDM 522, which supports multi-axis applications
  • VLT® Expansion Module EXM 520, which enables easy scalability by splitting the system architecture into multiple cabinets

With the introduction of the MSD 520, the new-generation VLT® FlexMotion servo portfolio is now complete, featuring advanced functional safety as one of its key highlights.  Ideal for demanding motion control applications, this servo portfolio delivers operational optimization with no compromise on safety or performance.
