Danfoss introduces an enhanced and a completely new electric expansion valve for CO2 installations

Thursday, October 23, 2025

Built on the top-performing ETS 5M valve, the new ETS 5T offers a reliable, robust valve in a compact size. The company is also introducing an enhanced version of its successful ETS 5M valve, covering an even wider range of applications.

The ETS 5T is the latest step in Danfoss’ ongoing efforts to support the refrigerant transition and provide HVAC&R professionals with the widest possible choice when designing CO2-based refrigeration systems.

CO2 refrigeration systems have been our focus for over 15 years. During that time, we’ve seen how food retailers have embraced this natural refrigerant as an attractive alternative to HFCs, with as many as 10,000 supermarkets switching to CO2 refrigeration systems each year. And with this newest addition to our electric expansion valve portfolio, we support an even wider range of CO2 systems, from the small, transportation units to large, transcritical installations.

A compact valve with a wide range of applications

The ETS 5T features the same compact design as Danfoss’ ETS 5M, which is the smallest electronic expansion valve (EEV) on the market. The 5T version is designed for CO2 applications from 4 to 19 kW, has a maximum working pressure (MWP) of 140 bar and a maximum operating pressure differential (MOPD) of 120 bar for transcritical CO2 systems. It supports a refrigerant temperature range from -40 to 80 degrees Celsius and an ambient temperature range of -40 to 80 degrees Celsius. The ETS 5T also supports bi-directional flow, operating at full performance in normal and reverse flow directions.

These features make the ETS 5T suitable for a wide range of applications.

In addition to the previously mentioned expansion within food retail and cold rooms, we’re also seeing CO2 as a refrigerant in lower capacity applications, and in these systems, it’s complementary to current use of Pulse Width Modulating (PWM) valve like the AKVP. With the ETS 5T, you get an expansion valve with the smallest size on the market, making it an ideal choice for transport air conditioning systems, condensing units and display cases and cabinets, as well as in reversible systems.

Upgraded ETS 5M well-suited for smaller capacity applications

Danfoss has also made enhancements to its existing ETS 5M valve, giving HVAC&R professionals more flexibility when designing systems.

We’ve added a bipolar coil extension which offers the higher performance level as a unipolar coil, while using the same current. The new coil has a lower heat loss, which extends the valve’s lifetime, and it’s compatible with our EKF and EKE 100 stepper valve SH controllers and drivers.

The upgraded valve supports a Max Working Pressure (MWP) of up to 49 bar, an MOPD of up to 42 bar, in both flow directions, and a temperature range of -40 to 80 degrees Celsius. It’s also corrosion and vibration resistant which makes it suitable for harsh environments.

With its compact form and wide range of orifice sizes, the upgraded ETS 5M can work even with smaller systems.

The 5M valve now comes with 0.8 and 1.0 orifices, which are ideal for residential heat pumps, cold rooms and transportation refrigeration.

The new version of the ETS 5M is suitable for A1, A2 and A3 refrigerant applications and is expected to attain UL certification by the end of 2025.

Ensuring reliability and low applied costs

Common for both valves was Danfoss’ desire to create a reliable, versatile valve that customers could install quickly and easily.

Both valves feature ‘Clip & Turn’ fixation, which makes them easy to install. The connector has a bi-metal design, which means installers don’t need to cool the valve body during installation. And you get a simpler system design with lower applied costs as the valves offer a high MOPD in both directions.

Supporting HVAC&R professionals in the refrigerant transition

According to Mark Sever, these additions to Danfoss’ electric expansion valve portfolio, together with the rest of Danfoss broad portfolio of filter dyers, shutoff ball valves, regulating and solenoid valves, valve drivers, controllers, compressors, drives and other applications related Danfoss products, demonstrate the company’s continued commitment to supporting the refrigeration industry in the transition to low-GWP refrigerants.

Our customers want reliable products that are easy to install and that comply with industry regulations, including the requirements for natural refrigerants. With our new CO2-compatible ETS 5T valve and the upgraded ETS 5M, we’re providing flexible valves that are ideal for air conditioning and refrigeration systems where reliability, performance and component size are the highest priority.
