As part of its commitment to sustainability, Canneberges Drummond Inc., a cranberry producer in Quebec, embarked on an ambitious project to electrify its pumping system. Historically, the company used diesel pumps, but the goal was to transition to a more eco-friendly automated solution while retaining diesel pumps for backup in case of power outages.
To meet this challenge, Canneberges Drummond Inc. collaborated with automation and control experts. The project required a solution capable of withstanding harsh conditions while fitting into the limited space of the pumping stations. Another major concern was ensuring smooth integration with the existing control systems.
Kopers, a leader in industrial electricity and automation with over 65 years of experience, was selected to integrate the modernization solution. Their role was to install and optimize the equipment to meet the project’s requirements.
To find the ideal solution, Kopers turned to 6MGB, a recognized provider of control systems and variable frequency drives. With a wide range of high-quality products, 6MGB recommended Danfoss' VLT® AQUA Drive FC 202 variable frequency drives. Their compact design was especially suited to the tight space constraints of the pumping stations.
“For our clients in cranberry production, the challenge was finding a variable frequency drive specifically designed for pumping. We needed a robust product, quickly available, offering great value for money, while also receiving high-quality service from the manufacturer and distributor,” explains André Perron, project manager for electrical, automation, and control at Kopers.
The selected variable frequency drives enabled easy integration thanks to their compatibility with the existing control systems and their ability to endure tough conditions. The MCT 31 Harmonic Calculation software was also employed to optimize performance, and the installation of the VLT® AHF 010 Advanced Harmonic Filter ensured stable operation while meeting the connectivity standards required by Hydro Quebec.
The project was completed within three months of the client’s approval. Through this modernization, Canneberges Drummond Inc. successfully automated its pumping system, reduced CO2 emissions, and improved system reliability. While the diesel pumps remain for backup use, they are now minimally relied upon.
This transformation not only modernized the company’s operations but also reinforced its commitment to sustainability. By choosing Danfoss FC202 drives, Kopers and 6MGB provided Canneberges Drummond Inc. with a robust and efficient technology, reducing long-term operational costs and contributing to the company’s environmental goals.
