Innovation Awards finalist provides high performance and cost savings for industrial applications
As a finalist in the Heating category of the AHR Expo Innovation Awards, Danfoss’ PSG Heating Scroll Compressor unlocks new possibilities for demanding high-temperature heat pump systems with its dependable scroll technology and high performance in demanding conditions. The exceptional value and cost advantages it offers to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) for industrial applications below 1 MW make it the best applied cost solution for high-temperature heat pumps.
The PSG utilizes hydrocarbon and HFO refrigerants to deliver hot water up to 212°F (100°C), enabling the decarbonization of mid-size industrial and process applications with scroll compressors utilizing natural R-600a and low-GWP R-1234ze/R-515B refrigerants. Available in two sizes (105 m³/h & 140 m³/h at 50 Hz and 127 f3/h & 168 f3/h at 60 Hz), the PSG features a robust, efficient, quiet, and low vibration scroll design. With a heating capacity of up to 115 kW per compressor, its flexible design supports various manifold configurations. Advanced features, like the integrated oil level switch with temperature sensor, enhance reliability, reduce oil-related failures, improve cold start efficiency and optimize operation, lowering life-cycle costs.
Specific design characteristics include enhanced refrigerant flow paths that minimize internal pressure drop, a fine-tuned non-return valve (NRV) for ensuring reliable operation in extreme conditions and an A3 refrigerants-compatible electronic module with a totally sealed internal relay. These features result in a simplified system design, lower applied costs and enhanced overall efficiency. Furthermore, a native oil level switch (OLS) reduces oil-related failures, minimizes downtime and lowers maintenance costs.
By replacing gas boilers and decreasing scope 1 emissions, PSG offers the best return on investment (ROI) on the market, driving significant cost savings and environmental benefits. Furthermore, its versatile design supports both hydrocarbon and HFO refrigerants, providing flexibility and future-proofing against evolving regulations.
“With industrial processes accounting for a substantial portion of global CO2 emissions, the adoption of industrial heat pumps projected to grow significantly,” said Nick Mislak, regional segment marketing director for HVAC at Danfoss. “The PSG is a flexible, energy-efficient and cost-effective solution and will be instrumental in enabling the shift to sustainable heating solutions.”
