First step towards smart city in Poland

Wednesday, 29 November 2017

The city of Słupsk and Danfoss have signed an agreement to build a vision for the city as smart and highly energy-efficient. First step taken.

The Mayor of one of the most eco-friendly and energy efficient cities in Poland – Słupsk - Robert Biedroń and Adam Jędrzejczak, President of Danfoss EER and President of Danfoss Poland, signed an agreement to build the capacity of a smart city.

The first stage of cooperation will be to replace old thermostats with Danfoss radiator sensors and thermostatic valves in buildings managed by the city, e.g. in the schools, municipal facilities, city offices, and other socially important facilities. 100 radiator sensors and thermostatic valves will be shipped to buildings in Słupsk.

Thanks to simple measures, such as the addition of temperature control in individual rooms, about 23 percent of energy can be saved.

The cooperation foresees readiness to work together in order to build a vision of Słupsk as a smart, highly energy-efficient city. Bearing in mind the accepted obligations of the international and European climate policy, as well as the goals of sustainable development, Słupsk and Danfoss Poland will strive to significantly reduce energy consumption in the city, improve the comfort of the inhabitants, and reduce the problem of energy poverty.

"In Poland, more than 87 percent of the heat consumption and over 57 percent of electricity consumption takes place in buildings. This is a significant contribution. Thanks to the Danfoss radiator sensors and thermostatic valves, the city of Słupsk will save the amount of energy needed to warm another building, such as a kindergarten. I hope that this energy, the warmth that I brought here today to the city of Słupsk, will inspire to further efforts to build a smart city," said Adam Jędrzejczak.

The agreement also envisages carrying out educational activities in the field of energy savings. The employees of the Housing Business and the administrators of the buildings were the first to be trained. The talks concerned significant savings and other benefits resulting from the regulation and balancing of the heating system.

"Cooperation with Danfoss is a very important step for us in the development of a city that is friendly to people and nature. I wish for the inhabitants of Słupsk to live well, so that instead of paying high bills for heating they can optimize costs and allocate the money, saved to something else for the benefit of themselves and the environment. It will be easier to improve the quality of life, in a very tangible, practical way with Danfoss," summed up the Mayor of Słupsk, Robert Biedroń.

Fact:

Słupsk is located in northern Poland, and has a population of almost 100,000 inhabitants.

Urban efficiency is the key to sustainable growth

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs has estimated that by 2050, the world’s population will reach about 9.8 billion – nearly 70% of whom will live in cities.

And the cities are what we need to focus on to reach the goals of the Paris agreement, which sets out a framework to keep global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.
