Our unique Digital displacement hydraulics is suitable for diesel, hybrid and fully electric off-highway machines. This fully-patented hydraulics has been in development for more than a decade. It has been designed by Danfoss to be easily integrated into standard machines – offering a straightforward route to improved efficiency and control.

By replacing a standard pump with a multi-outlet, digitally enabled pump, our customers enjoy improved productivity and control. Additionally, better fuel consumption and the potential to downsize engines or battery packs. It is a technology which delivers benefits today and will be equally beneficial tomorrow – whichever route you take.

  • Smoother faster control means more work done per day
  • Improved engine-to-work efficiency means increased maximum power – with the same size engine. Or the opportunity to downsize engines, without any loss of power or control
  • Intelligent digital controls mean individual cylinders are only called into action when required, reducing losses system-wide
  • This means longer work-cycles or smaller batteries for next-generation electric machines

We are now offering Digital Displacement hydraulics as single and dual pumps – with multiple outlets – which can be configured to meet customer needs.

Danfoss Digital Displacement – improved off-highway efficiency – whichever future you choose.

Digital Displacement® construction benefits

  • Smoother faster control means more work done per day
  • Improved engine-to-work efficiency means increased maximum power – with the same size engine

Digital Displacement® center of excellence

Each Danfoss Digital Displacement pump will be assembled at our new global Digital Displacement manufacturing and R&D facility near Edinburgh, Scotland.

Here we have developed a ground-breaking, dynamic manufacturing facility which brings a new approach to precision assembly and will ensure quality at every stage.

The fully flexible facility has been custom designed from the ground up to assemble a new generation of Digital Displacement pumps for off-highway and industrial customers.

Production has already begun, with the first customer pumps rolling off the line in August.

Digital Displacement® for construction

For off-highway machines, improved productivity per dollar invested is key. This is particularly true for applications with heavy hydraulic duty cycles such as excavators and forestry machines.

Digital Displacement pumps address this head on. Even a simple ‘plug and play’ pump swap will unleash greater control and better productivity with a short payback period.

In one field test, Danfoss engineers compared a conventional diesel-powered excavator with an identical excavator equipped with a straight-swap Digital Displacement pump.

Results showed a 15.3 percent improvement in trenching distance in an hour and 13.4 percent less fuel consumed per meter of trench. Making a digitally-enabled demonstrator 16.7 percent more productive than the current market leader.

Digital Displacement® for material handling

For material handling machines, the reduced losses of a Digital Displacement pump give the opportunity to downsize engines, without any loss of power or control.

This means improved efficiency and reduced emissions – with up to 40 percent reduction in opex.

Controllability is defined in software. This means we can change the machine dynamics to suit the operator.

The beauty is, the improved efficiency of Digital Displacement can be achieved no matter what power source you choose. Whether it is diesel, hybrid or electric.

Digital Displacement® for mining

With the rapid electrification of the mining sector, Digital Displacement is ideally placed to enable this transition.

Because our focus is on engine-to-work efficiency, our technology can enable new mining machines with smaller batteries or longer duty cycles.

This offers opportunities to reduce capex – or the capacity to operate a full duty cycle, without the need for a battery swap.

Digital Displacement® for electrification

Danfoss has already made a major step into this sector with the acquisition of Editron. Yet a major concern continues to be the length of duty cycle for battery vehicles – the off-road equivalent of ‘range anxiety’. And in this the value of system efficiency is critical.

To address this, Danfoss believes the next big step will be to integrate Digital Displacement technology alongside electric power drives.

If, by fully-utilizing the system-wide architectures enabled by Digital Displacement, we can reduce overall energy consumption. This can lead to smaller batteries or longer duty cycles – which could be revolutionary for the off-road sector.

Today a 17-tonne wheel loader equipped with Danfoss’ Editron powertrain and a Digital Displacement pump can deliver a 30 percent extended work cycle. If we compare two electric off-highway machines, the one with Digital Displacement can run longer, or can use a smaller battery than one without. This could translate into a €27,000 saving on the battery, and a significant reduction in annual running cost.

Digital Displacement® pump

Our Digital Displacement® hydraulics is a fundamental innovation. It utilizes a radial piston machine which enables cylinders in real time, using ultra-fast mechatronic valves controlled by an embedded, intelligent computer. This makes our pump highly controllable and extremely efficient. The result is lower energy losses, increased productivity and faster response time.
