n this interview, Thomas Nowak, Secretary General of the European Heat Pump Association, talks about how heat pumps are critical to decarbonizing buildings and cities. He discusses the tremendous growth in the heat pump market, what’s driving that growth and why it will continue over the next 10-20 years. Thomas also addresses the challenges of keeping up with increasing consumer demand for heat pump solutions.

Drew explains how heat pump applications depend on the system design. He specifies three main compressor design optimizations which all are used in heat pump applications. He talks about the standard lift, which is primarily used for water-cooled chillers, the medium lift, which is a hybrid for water-cooled chillers, and the high lift, which enables the highest temperature operating.

For this session, we welcome Morten Skovrup, Jörg Saar, and Jamie Kitchen to our panel for a talk about heat pumps. We will cover the definition of a ’heat pump’ as well as the many different types and sizes, from small spilled systems up to industrial-sized heat pumps for district heating. Focus will be on the heat pump itself, how it works, the efficiency, and what to be aware of when selecting and installing a heat pump in different regions, climate zones, and countries. Get a bit closer to the truth about heat pumps as a “new” source of heat—including if they can replace a furnace or boiler, and how it works with forced air or hydronic heating systems.
