BVTS thermostatic valve – the perfect choice with alternative fuels

09 June 2009
Danfoss launched the BVTS thermostatic valve for use in bio-mass boilers on the European market in December 2008.

There are two primary applications for the BVTS:
Firstly, it protects boilers against overheating by preventing water reaching boiling point. If the water temperature rises too high, the valve opens and allows cold water to flow through the heat exchange system, lowering the temperature quickly and efficiently.
Its second application is to prevent backburning. The BVTS monitors the temperature in the fuel feed system, and if the temperature rises above 95°C, the valve will release enough water to extinguish the fire.

New markets, new applications

Central Europe has previously been reliant on fossil fuels to warm homes, but price hikes and an unstable supply of oil and coal mean people are now looking for viable alternatives – and biomass boilers are proving popular. The BVTS is also being fitted to water-jacketed wood stoves – with great success.

Original equipment manufacturers in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia have given Danfoss BVTS thermostatic valves a warm welcome. Instability in the fossil fuel market has led to the adoption of more environmentally-friendly alternatives to heating homes, such as bio-mass boilers and wood stoves with water jackets. In water jacket systems, the heat generated by combustion warms the water between two shells that surround the stove. The hot water is then transported to radiators connected to the central heating system.
Biomass valves are used in biomass boilers
As simple and relatively cheap methods of heating homes, bio-mass boilers and wood stoves are already showing their huge potential in this region. Bio-mass fuels are CO2 neutral, and because local wood fuel is abundant, securing a constant supply is not an issue. Good news for bio-mass and wood stove users and great news for the environment.
