A temperature sensor that really can stand the heat

Temperature sensors with integrated transmitters are increasingly being used in applications where they must be able to withstand intense working conditions. Danfoss’ robust MBT 3560 is proving to be up to the challenge – even in the extreme environment of the drilling industry.

Traditionally, Pt100 sensors have been used in applications where there was a need to transform the temperature into an electrical signal. But some mobile hydraulic applications require a more stable and linear output signal than Pt100 sensors can manage. And that is where Danfoss’ MBT 3560 comes into its own. This compact sensor can withstand intense vibrations, making it one of Danfoss’ most reliable products. But it is its integrated electronics, which acts to enhance the electrical signal, that sets the MBT 3560 apart, delivering the following advantages:


  • The current signal can be conveyed to evaluation electronics across long distances without voltage interference.
  • The use of input cards with the standard signal 4-20 mA saves costs through reduced stock.
  • Installation costs are saved through reduced wiring, as only a 2-wire-system is necessary.
  • No wire compensation – common with Pt100 sensors – is required.
  • The risk of mistaking the two wires is eliminated through protection of the poles.
Capable of measuring temperatures from -50oC to +200oC, the MBT 3560 also offers a considerably reduced response time thanks to a new and innovative design of the sensor.
Danfoss temperature sensor for measuring oil temperature
When German drilling system manufacturer Tracto-Technik needed an efficient way to determine oil temperature on a new horizontal drilling system, it turned to the MBT 3560. The company had found that the slow, precise steering needed when drilling shafts led to problems, particularly when changing tools. The varying temperatures of the hydraulic oil leads to changes in viscosity which in turn makes it hard to control the system’s transmission.

The solution was the MBT 3560, which was chosen for its heavy-duty design, fast response time and simple processing of the 4-20mA current signal. The result? Enhanced start-up control and easier tool changeover for operators – even at extreme oil temperatures.
