Questions and Answers
What could be the consequence of the defect?
Danfoss has reason to suspect that the plastic material used until 1994 to produce the starting device will, over a period of time, deteriorate and decay in such a way that it may result in or contribute to an electric spark being generated when the refrigerator or freezer is started. Such a spark could ignite any flammable materials surrounding the starter – such as cobwebs or scraps of paper. The starting devices and compressors in question were produced in Germany until 1994. Starting devices produced after 1994 do not and will not carry this risk.
Which brands of refrigerators and freezers does this affect?
Danfoss does not produce refrigerators or freezers. Our compressors can be found in many different brands and types. Please look for the yellow label with the Danfoss name, logo and model number on the front of the black compressor stored at the back of your refrigerator or freezer. Please follow the instructions under "How to Check Your Refrigerator or Freezer” on the menu to the left of this web site.
Should I turn off my refrigerator immediately, just to be on the safe side?
Once you have established that there is a Danfoss compressor in your refrigerator or freezer dating back to 1994 or before, there is no urgent requirement to turn off the appliance, but you should turn it off while you are investigating the compressor. You can dramatically reduce any risk of fire by clearing the area surrounding the compressor at the back of the refrigerator or freezer for any inflammable material such as cobwebs or scraps of paper. Turn the appliance back on to avoid that your food in the refrigerator or freezer spoils while you place your order for the free spare part and seek the assistance of a professional to have it fitted as soon as possible.
What will happen to the refrigerator or freezer? Should I have it repaired or replaced?
If you would like to keep the refrigerator or freezer, the compressor’s starter must be replaced to eliminate the potential risk of fire. You could consider asking a technician for advice. Major energy-savings are often obtained when replacing old refrigerators or freezers.
Will the replacement of the starter cost me anything?
Danfoss will send you a complimentary starting device, but will not pay for the installation. If you live in a rental flat or rental house, the tenancy agreement will determine who is responsible for the maintenance of the interior. The installation costs are normally defined as costs incurred in connection with the maintenance of the interior.
What will you send me after I have been in touch with Danfoss?
When you order a new starter, you will receive a package by mail containing up to three starters and an installation guide. Three starters are needed to cover all the old types of starters. Using the enclosed installation guide, professional service technician can easily identify the correct starter and fit it in your appliance.
When is the Hotline open?
Danfoss’ dedicated toll free hotlines are open on weekdays from 9am-9pm; and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-5pm. The number in the UK is: 0808 238 1499. The number in the Republic of Ireland is: 1800 930260.
Who should I turn to for help fitting the new part?
We recommend you contact a professional service technician. You can find one in the Yellow Pages under “Refrigeration”. We do not recommend that you install the replacement device yourself unless you are a professional and qualified to do so.
Will the replacement eliminate the risk of fire?
Yes. Once the starter has been replaced, there is no longer any risk of fire.
