Danfoss’ super fast installation at Super Spar

28 June 2007
With more than 60 years experience in the refrigeration industry, Danfoss was the first choice when the installation of a new commercial refrigeration was required for the Biggest Super Spar in Gauteng, situated at Bel Air Shopping Centre, in Southern Johannesburg.
Contracted by Envirocool, who with over 12 years experience in the industry were already regarded as a preferred supplier for such installations, the Danfoss Adapkool® system was tendered and accepted based on its remarkable previous track record.

Kevin Bullick from Envirocool, who project managed the installation, comments “Having a strong understanding of the capabilities of the Adapkool® system, allowed us to confidently install the system, knowing that every requirement would be met – 100%” As with all new installations, the strong relationship between Danfoss and Envirocool was evident in the flawless and streamlined process that allowed the installation to take place so quickly.

Danie de Beer, Technical Engineer at Danfoss is confident that the system is the right installation for this Super Spar. He tells us, “As this is the largest Super Spar in Gauteng, it is only fitting that a premium product such as Adapkool® was chosen to control such an important outlet. The size of this Super Spar, coupled with the advanced capabilities of the Danfoss system, makes this an enormous project – both on a size scale and an investment scale.”

From start to finish, the installation and testing phase was completed in 6 weeks, which was way before schedule, and with the system being in place for over 2 months already, the Super Spar and its Adapkool® system are already producing the expected results.

The Adapkool® System installed has the following features:

Sensors used on site: Pt1000 - Factory calibration guarantees a better measuring accuracy than required in the EN 441-13 standard – without subsequent calibration on site (Pt 1000 ohms sensor).

Benefits of an AKV electronic expansion vale include:

  • Optimum utilisation of evaporator at all load conditions, which is a pre condition for major energy savings via optimised suction pressure and floating condensing pressure control
  • Accurate temperature control
  • Acts as a solenoid valve as well
  • Require no superheat to open
  • 12% Energy savings
  • Stable superheat over evaporator, causing higher humidity and less dehydration
  • Capacity range from 0,1 kW to 2,5 MW

Benefits of using EKC531D1 pack controllers

  • Between 10% and 20% energy saving, making use of the suction pressure optimisation
  • Up to 20% using the Variable speed drives on the condenser fans, combined with the floating condensing pressure regulation

Benefits from using the AKM software

  • Fully HACCP compliant
  • Full control over whole refrigeration system
  • Enables special functions like case cleaning with the click of a mouse
  • Food safety logs saved and printed automatically
  • Remote accessibility makes it easy for remote monitoring and fault finding
