Danfoss installation for Spar is a breeze

27 June 2007
In the upmarket area of Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth, Dennis Hayes has just recently opened his second SuperSpar.

After accompanying the Spar Group on a “look and learn” trip to the USA, Dennis brought back valuable insight into the operation of a world-class store. With this important information, Dennis then set out to get world leading contractors to install important elements into this Summerbreezz Spar to bring it up to standard with its international counterparts.

Special interest needed to be paid to the area that the store is situated in – an upmarket residential area, bordering the new Mercaso Shopping Centre.

Jones & Van Onselen, with over 47 years of experience and recognized as one of the countries leading refrigeration companies, in conjunction with AML Controls, were contracted to do the refrigeration installation. As a specialist on Danfoss products, and specifically the Adap-kool® system, AML was instrumental in the training on the merits of the Adap-kool® system that was recommended for the new SuperSpar.

Dennis Hayes tells us, “It was fabulous working with the AML and the Jones & Van Onselen teams. They really listened to my needs – resulting in sensors being identified and positioned in the right places first time around.”

Trevor Van Onselen, from Jones & Van Onselen, designed the system incorporating 3 main ring circuits running overhead through the service areas, keeping the services away from the double volume retail floor area. All 3 refrigeration circuits are well balanced and pressure drops are will within the design limits. To reduce initial capital cost, and to offset the investment in the Adap-kool® system by Dennis Hayes, he was given the option of utilising refurbished Hill cabinets.

“Using refurbished cabinets allows for more spending on better systems”, Trevor tells us, “and the decision was made for 70% of all refrigerated displays supplied to be refurbished. All back up cold and freezer storage facilities, as well as the 12 door beverage cooler are new.”
The Adap-kool® system was started up 2 weeks prior to the store opening – and immediate results were recognized. “The overall performance of the refrigeration system, to say the least, has been impressive”, says Ettienne Beets, senior technician of Jones & Van Onselen.
He goes on, “Pull down time from start up and after defrost to desired temperature points is phenomenal”.

After being involved with the installation of over 160 supermarkets around the country, Colin Head from AML tells us, “These are without question, the best results I have ever seen. This can only be attributed to the Danfoss Adap-kool® product, the quality of the design and the installation done by Jones & Van Onselen.

Sensors used on site: Pt1000 - Factory calibration guarantees a better measuring accuracy than required in the EN 441-13 standard – without subsequent calibration on site (Pt 1000 ohms sensor).

Benefits of an AKV electronic expansion valve include:

  • Optimum utilisation of evaporator at all load conditions, which is a pre condition for major energy savings via optimised suction pressure and floating condensing pressure control
  • Accurate temperature control
  • Acts as a solenoid valve as well
  • Require no superheat to open
  • 12% Energy savings
  • Stable superheat over evaporator, causing higher humidity and less dehydration
  • Capacity range from 0,1 kW to 3,1 kW

Benefits of using EKC531D1 pack controllers

  • Between 10% and 20% energy saving, making use of the suction pressure optimisation
  • Up to 20% using the Variable speed drives on the condenser fans, combined with the floating condensing pressure regulation

Benefits from using the AKM software

  • Fully HACCP compliant
  • Full control over whole refrigeration system Enables special functions like case cleaning with the click of a mouse
  • Food safety logs saved and printed automatically
  • Remote accessibility makes it easy for remote monitoring and fault finding
