Danfoss preferred partner in wind turbine industry

04 March 2009
With costs rising and resources dwindling, the quest for an alternative to fossil fuels has become a hot topic. Because it’s an unlimited natural resource, wind is one of the most attractive alternatives to fossil fuels. The energy produced from wind is clean, fast, competitive and carbon neutral.

The number of new wind turbines around the globe has increased at an average rate of 22.3 percent a year for the last five years. And a recent prognosis estimates that this rapid growth will continue by 20.7 percent a year over the next five years. The top ten suppliers of wind turbines in 2007 accounted for 95 percent of total wind turbine production. This is great news for the environment – and great news for Danfoss.
Danfoss products help control vital functions, such as gear boxes and hydraulic systems, in wind turbines. We directly and indirectly supply the top ten global wind turbine companies with pressure and temperature sensors, pressure and temperature switches, and industrial valves. In fact, everyone in the wind turbine industry is buying Danfoss products – and many manufacturers specifically request Danfoss sensors and switches for their wind turbine equipment.

Extreme environmental conditions place fierce demands on wind turbines. High winds, harsh offshore conditions, changing wind directions and high altitude locations all effect wind turbine performance. To meet these demands, Danfoss dedicated pressure sensors incorporate piezo resistive technology, which make them ideal for demanding wind turbine applications.

To provide additional support to our largest wind turbine customers, Danfoss established an account management team. This team works closely with the top five global wind turbine companies, including Vestas, Gamesa and Suzlon, to optimise their use of Danfoss products and help them get the best out of wind energy.
Another new development at Danfoss is Danfoss Wind Power, established by Danfoss Ventures. Danfoss Wind Power works closely with divisions across Danfoss to promote products for the wind turbine industry. Danfoss Wind Power focuses on frequency converters and power electronics, which are both products from our Danfoss Motion Controls Division. These further strengthen our contribution to the wind turbine industry.

Wind energy is important to Danfoss. As a supplier of dedicated products to wind turbine trendsetters, we’re working hard to make sure that wind energy produces an even larger share of global electricity in the future.
