Why CO2 in Food Retail Applications

Why CO2 Food Retail Applications?

An increasing number of smaller markets and supermarkets are being installed using natural refrigerants in Germany, Denmark, Sweden UK and other countries, the main drivers being taxes on HFCs, lower cost of CO2 installations and higher environmental consciousness of retailers.
The main reasons why CO2 is prefered to other refrigerants in retail sectors are:
  • CO2 is an environmentally friendly refrigerant: Global warming potential of CO2 is low (GWP of CO2=1 while that of R134a is 1.300 and approx. 4.000 for R404A), ozone depletion potential is 0
  • CO2 is non-toxic and non-flammable
  • The efficiency of a properly designed CO2 systems is at par with or better than that of conventional systems
  • CO2 is a sustainable refrigerant, that won’t be phased out in the future
  • Legislation favours the use of natural refrigerants like CO2 in many countries
  • The cost of CO2 is low. The cost of CO2 systems is still higher than that of conventional systems, but is decreasing, as contractors gain experience and manufacturers of equipment develop components for CO2.
Danfoss - Your CO2 Solutions Provider

Danfoss - Your CO2 Solution Provider

CO2 has absolutely zero ozone depletion effect, and its global warming potential is negligible in the amounts used for industrial and commercial refrigeration.

Danfoss can provide a variety of products for cascade applications, as well as developing trans-critical solutions.
