CO
2
in Industrial Refrigeration Applications
CO
2
belongs to the so-called “Natural” refrigerants, together with e.g. ammonia, hydrocarbons such as propane and butane, and water.
CO
2
- Unique Properties
All of the refrigerants mentioned above, however, have their respective disadvantages:
Ammonia is toxic
Hydrocarbons are flammable
Water has limited application possibilities
In comparison to this CO
2
is both non-toxic and non-flammable.
As should be evident from above, CO
2
differs from other common refrigerants in many aspects. Furthermore, CO
2
also has some unique properties.
Technical developments since 1920 have removed many of the barriers to using CO
2
, which once existed. However, CO
2
users must still be highly aware of its unique properties and take the necessary precautions to avoid problems in their refrigeration systems.
Please take the time to read our material on CO
2
with a particular focus on its use in Industrial Refrigeration applications.
