MBT 3270 now ready for temperatures up to 300°C

14 September 2009
Danfoss was in the process of re-engineering the MBT 3270 temperature sensor, when a potential customer needed to source a temperature sensor with a very fast reaction time. So Danfoss included this requirement in the redesign. Customers now benefit from a temperature sensor that can withstand high temperatures, has a faster reaction time, and more customization options.

Innovative and cost-effective design

After an intense development phase, Danfoss launched an updated version of the MBT 3270 temperature sensor in September 2009. The revamped model is less complex than its predecessor. It’s also easier to customise, has a faster reaction time, and new plug options. And of course, it can cope with temperatures up to 300°C.

So what were the challenges involved in re-developing a temperature sensor for high temperature applications like oil free air compressors and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems?

The initial challenge was finding a new filling material that can survive at 300°C, and still maintain excellent heat transfer capabilities. Oil free air compressors and EGR systems both measure gases, so it also had to react fast. In fact, a potential customer set a target of Tau <10 seconds in exhaust gas flowing at 6 m/s. So Danfoss set about designing a new wind tunnel to measure the air velocity. And the entire process was computer controlled to eliminate human error.

The result is a compact modular design that not only beat the Tau < 10 seconds target by two seconds in testing, but also has other advantages. The modular design means plugs, cables, process connections, protection tubes and sensor elements can be combined to suit customer needs. The modular design also standardizes production processes, so costs are kept down without compromizing Danfoss quality.

A fast, reliable and robust sensor, the MBT 3270 high temperature sensor is definitely worth trying out. Contact your nearest Danfoss dealer for details.
