Danfoss launches a new solution for low energy housing, boasting an increased COP* of 5%!

13 July 2012
High energy prices and global climate changes are forcing us to change our energy consumption habits. Since buildings use 40% of the total energy in the European Union, energy efficient houses are becoming more and more interesting.
”We as a manufacturer of heat pumps have stepped up to the plate to meet the trend of such demands and lead the way with our new line of ground source heat pumps. With an output of 4 kW it’s the right soloution for low-energy houses”. - says Lars Bergen, Marketing Director at Danfoss Heat Pump.

Danfoss offers a range of heat pumps that can be tailored to our customers needs. As a response to the growing popularity of low-energy houses, in the beginning of 2012 Danfoss introduced a new line of ground source heat pumps with an output capacity of 4 kW. Such heat pumps like DHP-L Opti and DHP-H Opti (model with integrated 180l water heater) now have a new model of scroll compressor which gives an increased COP of 5%. ”Using the new model of scroll compressor we reach 4,09 COP** and at the same time a sound power level of 42 dB(A)*** - This is efficiency” - says Johan Mellstig Product Manager at Danfoss.

Energy efficient houses are any type of house that use less energy than a regular one. There is no global definition for low-energy houses. Because national standards vary considerably, 'low energy' developments in one country may not meet 'normal practice' in another. Right now, it is generally considered that low-energy houses use around half of the energy previously mentioned for home heating, typically in the range of 30 kWh/m² to 20 kWh/m² per year.

Low-energy buildings typically use high levels of insulation and energy efficient windows, providing low levels of heat loss and efficient energy ventilation . This in conjuction with passive solar building design techniques and hot water heat recycling technologies that recover heat from showers and dishwashers, results in low-energy houses that consume less energy.

As building regulators demand more and more energy efficiency in houses, low energy technologies become more important. A low energy house will provide thermal comfort, healthy living, lower heating costs and a higher degree of user satisfaction.

* - COP (Coefficient Of Performance) - this is a measure if the heat pump's efficiency. Indicates
the relationship between the amount of energy produced and consumed.
** - At B0W35 according to EN 14511 (including circulation pumps).
*** - Sound power level measured according to EN ISO 3741 at B0W45 (EN 12102).
