Variable Speed Compressor Poised to Reduce Energy Consumption and Carbon Footprint

16 October 2008
The Apexx™ SLV, Danfoss’ new compressor for small and mid-size cooling cabinets with integral compressors, promises relief for shop owners with large electricity bills and a desire to cut overall carbon footprint. Featuring a newly designed variable speed control, the SLV can reduce energy consumption by up to 40 % compared to standard solutions currently available.

“Where most traditional compressors use energy-demanding ON/OFF functions for temperature control, the SLV features a sophisticated, built-in variable speed control that automatically adjusts compressor output to cooling demand,” explains Vice President Poul Harder Nielsen, Danfoss Compressors, Flensburg. “The result is a dramatic reduction in overall energy-use.”
The SLV will also make life easier for shop owners who plan for – and aim to comply with – future refrigerant legal requirements. As one of the only compressors in its category, the SLV is designed to work with the environmentally friendly R290a propane refrigerant as well as the more traditional commercial refrigerants currently in use.

But increased environmental friendliness is not the only feature offered by the new compressor. It is designed with a number of built-in options for data-logging, thereby enabling shop owners to comply with the HACCP standard on food quality. And if more detailed logging options are required, the SLV can easily be connected to the Danfoss ADAP-KOOL® Next Generation store control solution.

The SLV also offers a greatly reduced noise-level. The reason is that the variable speed control keeps the compressor operating at a lower average speed level.

Further benefits include failure detection, thermostat control, and a compact design with integrated electronic controls that make it easy to integrate and service in existing systems. It also features motor protection for longer product life-time and a new motor design securing high cooling capacity in ambient temperatures up to +45 °C.

The SLV compressor is produced at Danfoss Compressors GmbH in Flensburg, Germany.

Continuing a History of Innovation

When engineer Mads Clausen had his first working expansion valve for refrigeration systems ready in 1932, it was called Danfoss: Dan- because it was Danish; and -foss because the sound of the valve reminded him of the sound of a stream of water.
