Temperature control

Reliable temperature control protects your precious engine

26 January 2009
A marine engine is the heart of a ship – providing both propulsion and power generation. The consequences of engine failure while a long way from shore could be significant. That’s why the temperature control of marine engines is vital. Monitoring the temperature of oil, fuel, water and exhaust gases is key to ensuring early warning of any possible faults.

Meeting the temperature challenge

Temperature measurement is more complicated than other measurements. The biggest challenge for Danfoss engineers is to reduce the response time – the time it takes for a sensor to react to any change in temperature.

The time taken is evaluated by a factor defined as a time constant, T0.5 or T0.9, which is the time taken to reach 50 percent or 90 percent of the temperature change. The value of the time constant can vary from several seconds to several minutes, depending on what is being measured and the sensor design. Danfoss temperature controls keep the time constant at a minimum, ensuring a more accurate, and current, measurement.

Fast and accurate
Measuring temperatures using different gauges and sensors at a specific point will give different readings. As a rule of thumb, the sensor/gauge that gives you the higher reading is the most accurate – especially when measuring high temperatures, the temperature loss will have a big negative impact on the measuring result.

Danfoss takes the above into account and through careful material selection and innovative design of the sensor the temperature loss is kept at a minimum. This is one of the reasons why Danfoss has built such a strong reputation in the engine temperature control market.
