VLT® keeps music flowing from ancient organ

An organ, built in Waldkirch, Black Forest Germany, in the early 1920’s by A.Ruth & Sohn mechanical organ builders, has been revived by employing two single-phase VLT® drives to provide air.

The motor powers involved were 0,11kw for the music motor and 1.1 kw for the fan motor.

The customer also saw a benefit from utilising the speed control on the fan motor to increase the air flow to compensate for inefficiencies in the organ accrued through wear and tear.

Accordingly the drive, once fitted to the fan motor, enabled the speed to be adjusted to give the optimum air flow.

An additional advantage was that the organ may be used on sites where the supply may be limited.

The organ was originally used with a fairground ride in Germany and Switzerland, and was bought from Switzerland by an English company to take to events and shows around England. It was brought in for repairs and re-leathering, tuning and to have some new music books before going into a local organ museum for display.

When brought in, it was all fitted for 3-phase, and instead of fitting it with single to three phase converters, Danfoss partner E. Bennett Electrical proposed variable speed drive.
