Huge District Cooling Substation for Finland's largest Department Store

Danfoss LPM manufactured the biggest factory produced district cooling substation in Finland for the Stockmann department store in January - February 2008.
 
The cooling substation was needed for air ventilation and cooling down the cold storage space in the department store. And since the implementation of this huge substation, a second order for a very compact substation from the same department store was placed with us.
The Stockmann department store is located in the heart of Finland's capital, Helsinki. It is the largest department store in Finland. Danfoss took part in an ongoing enlargement project by building up a huge district cooling substation. District cooling production in Helsinki was started in 1998.

Customized solutions
For a project of this size no standard solutions can be used. Instead the substation was planned in close co-operation with the customer to meet all the given requirements. The process required continuous discussions between the contractor, the department store Stockmann and the energy plant Helsingin Energia to ensure the best solution for this project.

Technical Data on the District Cooling Substation for Stockmann
 
  • Outer dimensions of the substation: length 15m, width 6.5m and height 3.5m
  • The cooling substation’s capacity is 7745 kW, divided into three circuits
  • The substation includes 7 huge gasketed heat exchangers
  • Piping material in the primary side is carbon steel and in the secondary side acidproof steel Pipe sizes in the primary side DN 300 and in the secondary side DN 150/250/300
 
What is district cooling? Benefits?
District cooling can be defined as centralized production and distribution of cooling energy from the cooling plant to the industrial, commercial and residential buildings to cool the indoor climate. Typical source is sea or lake water. District cooling substations are used in the process of distributing cooling energy into buildings.
