String inverters for Power Plants

19 February 2009
To exemplify the strengths of string inverters as an alternative to central inverters in power plants, Danfoss Solar Inverters have made a concept paper which is available for download.

The paper is called "Concept Paper, String inverters for Power Plants" and gives a technical insight into the requirements and planning of a large PV plant, where string inverters and compact transformer stations are used.
It can be downloaded by using the link below.

Why Consider String inverters?

Today's high-end string inverters incorporate the major advantages of central inverters, such as high system voltage and true three phased output without sacrificing the high efficiencies.
Combined with the well known strengths of string inverters this grants a series of advantages.

  • Reduced Installation Costs
The wide specifications of high-end string inverters result in reduced installation costs as cabling is simplified, and junction boxes can be omitted.
  • Increased Yield

  • Yield is increased as losses in both AC and DC cabling are reduced, and multiple inputs and MPP trackers ensure optimum utilisation of the power available.
  • Easy Installation
String inverters and compact transformer stations are commonly used and have short lead times. They are easy to install and can be placed in the field with no influence on the placement of the PV module substructures.
  • Easy Service
Service contracts known from central inverters are not necessary, and no special training is required to install, maintain or exchange string inverters.

Concept Paper
The concept paper exemplifies the strengths of string inverters, by examining a theoretical plant of 10MWp. The plant is thoroughly investigated, and layout options and suggestions to wiring are presented in the appendices.
