CO2 in Light Commercial Applications

Why CO2 in Light Commercial Applications?

Light commercial applications are as a rule factory made, and therefore the leakage of refrigerant out of small systems is relatively small. For example, how often do you need to fill refrigerant in your kitchen refrigerator? The main environmental impact of the light commercial refrigeration equipment comes from energy consumption. That is why it is highly advantageous to use refrigerants with high efficiency for small factory made refrigeration systems.
While the theoretical efficiency of CO2 is very low for medium and high temperature applications, there is evidence that in practice, efficiency is not as poor as expected. The high volumetric efficiency of CO2 means that it is possible to move significant amounts of heat with a small volume, hence CO2 is not so sensitive to losses in compressors or in piping. Regardless of efficiency, CO2 may also be attractive in applications such as:

  • Transport refrigeration, where leakages are relatively high and flammable refrigerants can not be used
  • Heat pumps due to unique CO2 properties

Danfoss is working on identification of applications where CO2 is a good alternative and offers its support to customers who would like to build small commercial refrigeration systems.
