CFC Phase Out

The global phase out of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) refrigerants (e.g. R12 or R502) started back in 1995 under the international treaty known as The Montreal Protocol. Today (January 1, 2010), the protocol states that CFCs are phased out, which means it is prohibited to produced or consume CFCs in all countries that have signed the treaty. Even though the Montreal Protocol does not forbid the use of existing or recycled controlled substances beyond the phase out dates, you will in many countries find a full ban as the market for CFCs slowly diminishes.

The Montreal Protocol is the overall international policy that sets the guidelines/frames for the country policies on CFC. This means that the protocol will be transformed into national or regional law/policies, and it might be even stricter policies than the guidelines specified in the Montreal Protocol.

Danfoss Product Offering
Danfoss does not produce nor supply any products, including replacement parts, dedicated for use with CFCs in the EU and in China. So in case you have an old system employing CFC refrigerants, Danfoss recommends replacing the system with a new one. Seen both from an environmental and from an energy efficiency perspective, this is the best solution.

Service replacement parts for use in CFC systems remain available in many other countries. Please check with your local Danfoss sales office regarding availability in your country.

Alternatives Refrigerants
Danfoss recommend sustainable climate thinking, e.g. by choosing other refrigerant alternatives such as low GWP refrigerants.

Drop-In Refrigerants
In case it is not possible for you to change to an alternative refrigerant, you can use one of the drop-in refrigerants available on the market. Depending on the type of the chosen drop-in refrigerant you can check the availability/compatibility of the components by exploring the Danfoss product portfolio.
