Chapter 1. AKD 102 drives energy savings
It's a proven fact that variable speed drives save significant energy, by providing better capacity control and with the rising cost of energy the return on investment that is provided by installing drives has never been better.

The continuous variable speed control by AKD Drive Units, dedicated to refrigeration and HVAC applications and designed for food retail facilities, makes intelligent capacity control possible with Intelligent compressor and condenser fan control a 'must' in any optimised refrigeration system.A built in "wizard set up menu" guides the installer through the set up of the drive in a clear and structured manner. Included on this local control panel is an "info" button which is essentially a built in drive instruction manual which helps the user to both gain information and also suggests other parameters which may need to be changed. The setup wizard covers the three most common applications in supermarket refrigeration (Compressors, Condensers and Pumps), with all the drives in the AKD 102 series, from 1.5 to 125 HP, having the same setup wizard, display, logical menu structure, and built-in manual.
Chapter 2. Compressors and Condensers
Matching cooling capacity to constantly changing supermarket loads without excessive compressor cycling is a challenge. An AKD 102 drive on one compressor means much less cycling. Compressor capacity is always exactly matched to the load, resulting in a higher COP. With the AKD 102, there is no wasted capacity and no wasted energy.

The pack controller is able to control a pack of three compressors (where one compressor is speed controlled and two compressors are cut in/out). The same works for a condenser, so the pack controller can control three condensers or fans where the first step is speed controlled.

With traditional fixed speed strategies using a pressure set point or a temperature differential, fans are staged. When an increase in condenser capacity is needed, a stage of fans is brought on, but always at full speed and full capacity.

The result is that much of the time the condenser is running with excess capacity, wasting energy. In contrast, a variable speed strategy yields continuously variable capacity, and fans deliver exactly the capacity needed all the time, with no wasted capacity and no wasted energy. When the AKD is working on a condenser and has its own pressure transmitter and set point, the AKD supports 'floating' condenser control.

Danfoss is able to connect an extra sensor to the AKD, which ensure that adjustments to the set point are made according to the outside (ambient) temperature.
Chapter 3. Pumps
With their substantial reduction in refrigerant charge, secondary refrigeration systems are seeing increasing application. These systems require pumps to circulate the secondary fluid. A variable speed pump maintains constant fluid pressure as system load changes, assuring maximum system efficiency. An AKD 102 controlling the pump in a secondary refrigeration system with or without connection to an EMS has multiple safety and energy saving functions, including:

  • No-flow detection
  • An energy-saving sleep mode
  • End-of-curve protection
The pack controller is not available for pump control.

Danfoss drives can control the speed of up to three compressors and improve control performance by minimising the number of cut-ins and cut-outs. A typical store that has an ADAP-KOOL® refrigeration system solution installed could achieve as much as a 25% energy saving when compared to a non-optimised system.

The usage of AKD Drives also contributes to the compliance of the EuP Directive (Eco-Design Requirements for Energy Using Products), which defines the requirements for creating environmentally suitable products by focussing on energy savings.
