Why does the valve not close?
Answer: Valve issues:
Check if there is dirt in the main orifice.
Check for outside damage of the valve – e.g. has it been dropped? (Bent armature tube)
Check if the equalizing orifice connection is blocked because of dirt or deposits.
- Check pilot filter or pilot drillings.
- Armature is stuck in the armature tube.
Check if the diaphragm function is limited
- Because of wear or swelling (e.g. EPDM seal exposed to oil)
Coils issues (only NO versions):
No voltage on coil
- Lift coil slightly and note whether it offers resistance.
- Note: Never remove a coil with voltage applied - it might burn out.
Incorrect voltage/frequency
- Check to make sure that coil data is the same as the installation data. Measure the operating voltage at the coil.
- Permissible voltage variation:
- V±10% for dual frequency; dc and NO applications
- +10% / -15% for ac on single frequency voltages
- If necessary, replace coil with correct version.
Coil burnt out
- Why is the coil burnt?
- Differential pressure too high (valve will not open and thereby consume too much power)
- Too high ambient or media temperature, outside of specifications.
- Moisture in the coil (the coil IP rating does not fit the application)
Can the Danfoss solenoid valves operate by themselves or do I need to buy other things?
Answer: All solenoid valves require electrical coils to work. The type of coil we recommend with the valve depends on your voltage requirements and other criteria, and the options can be seen the corresponding technical brochure. We also offer valves with coil assembled.
Also often required is a cable plug to fit onto the coil and is for wiring up the electrics to the valve. Often with solenoid valves we recommend a filter, preferably a type with a removable element which can be cleaned. We would also recommend a check valve if the solenoid will experience back pressure. All Industrial Danfoss standard solenoid valves have female thread connections.
What IP ratings do the valves have?
Answer: IP ratings apply to the cable plug which is fitted onto the solenoid coil. Danfoss can supply cable plugs and coils to IP00 (no plug), IP20 (plastic protective cap), IP43 (only steam coils), IP65 (standard DIN plug) or IP67 (standard Danfoss terminalbox). The IP rating is the plug's protection against mechanical and moisture penetration. The first number relates to mechanical penetration and the second number is the moisture penetration - the higher the number, the greater the protection. Our IP67 coils can withstand submersion under water at a depth of 1 m for a period of 1/2 hour.
What happened to the code numbers for the WRc approved valves?
Why does the solenoid valve not open?
Answer: Coils issues:
• No voltage on coil
- Check whether valve is de-energized open or closed (NO or NC): Use a magnetic detector.
- Lift coil slightly and note whether it offers resistance.
- Note: Never remove a coil with voltage applied - it might burn out.
• No power to the coil (NC version) - check relay contacts, check lead connections and check fuses.
• Incorrect voltage/frequency
- Check to make sure that coil data is the same as the installation data. Measure the operating voltage at the coil.
- Permissible voltage variation:
- V±10% for dual frequency; dc and NO applications
- +10% / -15% for ac on single frequency voltages
- If necessary, replace coil with correct version.
• Coil burnt out
- Why is the coil burnt?
- Differential pressure too high (valve will not open and thereby take a too high consumption of power)
- Too high ambient or media temperature, outside of specifications.
- Moisture in the coil (the coil IP rating does not fit the application)
Valve issues:
• Check for outside damage of the valve – e.g. has it been dropped? (bend armature tube)
• Pilot connection blocked because of dirt or deposits.
- Check the equalizing orifice
- Eventually pilot filter or pilot drillings
- Armature is stocked in the armature tube
• The diaphragm function is limited
- Because of wear out or swelling (EPDM exposed to oil)
Why does the solenoid valve sound wrong (humming)?
I have a coil here - which valve can I use?
Answer: As long as the coil is a Danfoss solenoid valve coil, you can use any valve which is suitable for your application. Danfoss have two main coil systems: Type A, a compact 9 mm coil system, usually black, which fits all valves with A as the 6th letter of the designation, e.g. EV220A. Type B coils, 13.5 mm, are usually blue in colour and fit all valves with B as the 6th designation, e.g. EV220B. For valve and coil selection, please see our internet product catalogue. If you require help in valve selection please contact us.
Can you supply valve coils for hazardous areas?
What is a kv-value?
Answer: Capacity / kv - value:
– Specifies how many m3/hour (capacity) water is passing through the valve at a differential pressure at 1 bar.
– Is a result of all the different constants coming from shape of orifices, units etc. which are reduced to one new constant, the kv - value.
– Is used to calculate capacity:
– ? = density (kg / m3)
– ?P = P1 - P2
Q = k v ?P [m3 / h]
What is the difference between direct- and servo-operated solenoid valves?
Answer: Physical differences:
Direct-operated valves have an armature that controls the fluid.
Servo-operated valves have an armature that controls the pilot system that controls a diaphragm or a piston.
Differential pressure differences:
Servo-operated valves require a minimum differential pressure to keep the valve open, whilst direct-operated valves do not require a minimum differential pressure to operate.
Which media are your solenoid valves suited for?
Answer: Danfoss manufactures valves in many different body and seal materials to suit most media. We have valves specifically engineered for media from drinking water and air to steam, petrol and oil types.
If you are unsure on suitability of the valve with the medium in question, please download our technical brochures or contact your local Danfoss company.

What is water hammer?
I need an EV220B 1/2" for an open water system. Which one should I choose?
What does servo-operated mean? Has it to do with servo control?
Can I mount an EV220B valve upside down?
I have mounted an EV220B valve in the warm water circuit of a heating system. The valve does not open. Is it defect?
Answer: Under the circumstances that there is no dirt or limestone in the system, it is likely that the differential pressure is too low to operate the valve. In a closed system we recommend using a valve which doesn't require a differential pressure. If you use an assisted lift operated valve type EV250B, capable of operating from 0 bar differential pressure, your valve will work correctly.
Is it possible to use the Danfoss solenoid valves on natural gas installations?
I have ordered an EV220B valve NO, but if I blow through the valve, it is closed. Have I got a NC valve?
Answer: Like an NC diaphragm valve, an NO valve requires a minimum differential pressure of about 0.3 bar to open. Therefore you cannot open the valve just by blowing, and so it can be difficult to decide if a valve is NC or NO just by blowing.
How can I see if my solenoid valve is NC or NO?
Can I order only the upper part of a valve housing as a spare part?
Where do I direct commercial or technical questions?
What are the difference between direct-, servo- and assisted lift operated valves?
Answer: On a direct-operated valve the armature opens the main orifice of the valve. On a servo-operated valve the armature opens a small pilot valve that reliefs the pressure and the volume above the diaphragm, so that the differential pressure can lift the diaphragm and opens the valve. The assisted lift operated valve operates similar to the servo-operated valve, however the armature is connected to the diaphragm and will lift it to open the valve even if there is no differential pressure.

Is Danfoss a German company?
Can I order a solenoid valve with a 380V AC coil assembled?
Can we offer a valve according to EN161?
Can I test the function of a solenoid valve by moving up and down the energized coil?
Answer: No, you should never take off the coil from the valve, when the coil is energized. There is a risk that it will momentally burn down. If you need to test it, you must first of all de-energize the coil.
Danfoss offers a permanent magnet for manually testing valve function.
How can I connect a solenoid valve with a pressure/temperature switch?
What type of seal material is appropriate for glycol ?
Can I use the EPDM seal material for air?
Answer: Yes, it is possible, but only when you are sure that the air is free of oil and grease.
Most air compressors are lubricated with grease, which will mix up with the compressed air. In this case, you should use a valve with NBR or FKM (viton) seal material.
My solenoid valve is not working. What could be wrong?
Answer: The following has to be checked:
1) The medium can be used for the application
2) Seal material can be used with the medium
2) The diiferential pressure is within the specifications
3) Position of the valve is correct
4) Check the coil input, such as voltage and frequency according to specifications
5) Is the coil burned or disconnected?
6) Secure that the valve and the armature are not blocked with dirt
The solenoid valve EV250B is leaking. What should I do?
Answer: First of all you need to determine whether the the leaking is internal or external.
Internal leak: Normally comes from dirt or deposits on the orifice. In this case you should disassemble the valve, clean it to secure that there is no dirt particles blocking between the orifice and the diaphragm, avoiding the valve to close.
External leak: You should check the following:
1) Seal material not appropriate for the medium
2) Temperature too low or too high
3) Pressure too high
Is it possible to order a normally open (NO) version of the solenoid valve EV220B 65-100 Cl?
How can I replace 032U7328?
Answer: 032U7328 was the solenoid valve body for EV220B 50 in gun metal. Now the body is made in brass or DZR brass.
If you want to replace this valve or buy a spare part set it is important to know what the original seal and NO/NC function was.
Original solenoid valve code nos. could be 032U7150, -7175, -7151, -7152, -7185, -7153 or -5850.
I assemble air suspension system for cars, does Danfoss have any solenoid valve for this kind of application?
I have a Danfoss solenoid valve in NO (normally open) version. Is it possible to change this valve to a NC (normally closed) version?
Answer: No, unfortunately.
Since an NO unit is normally one actuator unit that can not be separated and since we are not supplying our NC spare kits including armature tube, the only possible "conversion" will be to buy a new NC valve.
A conversion from NC to NO is often possible using NO kits.
What is the difference between the EV220B and EV250B valves?
Answer: Valves type EV220B (servo-operated) are mainly used for open systems, where the differential pressure is higher than a certain value.
An EV250B (assisted lift operated) can be used for both open and closed systems, but is mainly used in closed systems where the pressure conditions are low or uncertain. If you are not sure what the exact differential pressure will be, choose the EV250B.
I am looking for a gas valve for Argon application for a closed system, which valve could I use?
Can you send me a UL certificate for EV220A and an A-series coil?
Answer: This A-serie of valves and coils are UL recognized, not UL approved, and can therefore not be sold as single components.
Therefore we recommend that you buy the B-series valves and coils, which are all UL listed.
Does the Kv value correspond to the value of the flow?
Answer: Yes, the Kv value we mention in product catalogues and technical brochures gives the capacity of water with the differential pressure of 1 bar measured in cubic meter per hour :
Q=Kv*v(?P/?) unit m3/hour; ?P=differential pressure; ?=density.
Q=flow
Kv=constant
?P=in pressure - out pressure
?=? of the fluid

Is it possible to install an EV220B (15-50 series) on vertical pipes?
Does Danfoss offer a solenoid valve KIWA approval, necessary to approve a water pump module?
Answer: No, but for the EV220B valve we have the English approval WRAS, the French approval ATTESTATION DE CONFORMITE SANITAIRE, ACS and the Polish approval PANSTWOWY ZAKLAD HIGIENY, PZH.
Which solenoid valve should I choose for Glycol as a medium?
I have an EV220B 25B that does not close properly - should I unscrew the equalizing orifice to close it?
Answer: First of all you need to find out what the medium is. Hard water could cause some trouble with valve closing, if the equalizing orifice is blocked. You have to check the differential pressure which should be at 0.3 bar min. The equalising orifice could be changed if necessary; have a look on the technical brochure available on our internet site. Spare part kits with diaphragm and O-ring and gaskets are also available.

Can I get Danfoss solenoid valves suitable for seawater?
Answer: Yes, however the amount of salt in seawater, oxygen concentration and temperature of the water all determine how the medium influences the different solenoid valve materials.
The best option is an EV220B in stainless steel, or the EV222B, featuring an isolating diaphragm.
Can I download product approvals & certificate from the Danfoss websites?
Answer: Yes, in our internet product catalogue, all product approvals & certificates are listed. If you are unable to local a specific document, please e-mail or call us.
Are EV250B valves suitable for vacuum?
What does "solenoid" mean?
Answer: A solenoid is a three-dimensional coil. In physics, the term solenoid refers to a loop of wire, often wrapped around a metallic core, which produces a magnetic field when an electric current passes through it.
Can I an EV220B valve for vacuum?
In a open water system, I have an EV210 valve which does not open - what can be wrong?
Answer: Most likely the system pressure is too high. The EV210B operates from 0 to a limited differential pressure, especially on bigger valve sizes. If this is the case, we recommend a more powerful coil or a valve type EV220B or EV250B.
I think my valve coil has short circuited, caused by water. Can I order an O-ring to place under the coil?
Answer: The coil can break down if water enters, because of a missing O-ring between the coil and the valve body. Extra o-rings (10 pcs., ordering no. 018F0094) are available.
Please note that all solenoid valves are supplied with O-rings, not the coils.
Are your valves certified for use with water?
Answer: All our EV210A, EV210B, EV220A, EV220B, EV250B are certified by WRAS. Some of the EV220B valve also have the French approval ATTESTATION DE CONFORMITE SANITAIRE, ACS and the Polish approval PANSTWOWY ZAKLAD HIGIENY, PZH. All these valves have seal material in EPDM.
Which media can Danfoss products be used with?
