Saving energy in mobile hydraulic equipment

Sensing the load with Danfoss pressure transmitters

19 February 2009
For the owners of mobile hydraulic equipment, performance and cost have always been important issues. But growing concerns over energy consumption have seen a shift in focus towards reducing energy waste in mobile hydraulic applications.

An electronic load sensing (ELS) system can help you get the best out of your mobile hydraulic equipment. More efficient than traditional hydraulic load sensing systems, they’re good news for mobile hydraulic system owners. And Danfoss pressure transmitters are part of the solution.

Get the best from your mobile hydraulic system

Mobile hydraulic systems transform large amounts of mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. In a hydraulic load sensing system, the system pressure and flow is adjusted to the actual demand. To transmit the pressure information, load sensing lines are run from valve work ports to the control input of a variable displacement pump. Typically the highest sensed pressure from the work ports is selected through a chain of shuttle valves.

In an ELS system, pressure transmitters detect work port pressures and send the information to an electronic controller connected to the variable displacement pump. This is much more accurate and sophisticated than hydro-mechanical load sensing – and explains why they’re growing in popularity.
The electronic load sensing system adjusts supply to demand – if the machine needs less hydraulic pressure, it delivers less. And because the electronic load sensing system provides complete control based on demand, the machinery uses less energy, there is less wear and tear on equipment and, of course, lower maintenance costs.

But it doesn’t stop there. When compared with hydro-mechanical load sensing systems, electronic load sensing systems also offer:

  • Greater system stability
  • Increased efficiency
  • Better control
  • Higher flexibility
  • Simpler system architecture
  • Improved functionality, including anti-stall functions and flow reduction

If you want to get the best from your mobile hydraulic equipment, electronic load sensing systems are an excellent way to improve stability and performance. And with Danfoss pressure transmitters at the heart of the system, you can’t go wrong.
