Danfoss VLT Drives Harmonics

Harmonic distortion is costing you a fortune

Harmonics are the by-product of modern power electronic equipment. Like the fast semi-conductor switches used in equipment such as VSDs, UPSs and battery chargers. These are all known as non-linear loads contaminating your mains supplies.

The irony is that equipment powered by switched-mode power supplies, including computers, are frequently the very equipment most sensitive to the mains corruption caused by harmonics.

Put simply, harmonics reduce reliability, affect product quality and increase operating costs.

Danfoss has the solution

Harmonics is an unavoidable aspect of business life. But it can be corrected and Danfoss offers a number of very powerful sollutions to limit harmonics in electrical drives systems to a minimum. Protecting your equipment and reducing costs.

Harmonic distortion

A harmonic of a wave is a component frequency of the signal that is an integer multiple of the fundamental frequency.

In electrical systems, harmonics are an integer multiple of the supply frequency (60 Hz); 120 Hz, 180 Hz, 240 Hz etcetera.

Harmonics causing problems

Because all electrical equipment is designed for use on a pure sinusoidal supply, harmonic distortion can cause all kind of adverse effects.

Harmonics can make your equipment mallfunction and reduces the reliability and quality of your processes.

Danfoss' solutions

Danfoss VLT drives come with built-in DC-coils* to reduce the harmonics interference. In most cases this is sufficient to avoid voltage pollution.

However, in some cases additional harmonic suppression might be required. In that case Danfoss offers a wide range of individual mitigation solutions.

Measuring Harmonics

Harmonic distortion exists in all electrical systems. It is the degree of distortion that is important
