Fieldbus Communication

Fieldbus is the name of a family of industrial computer network protocols used for real-time distributed control.

A complex automated industrial system — such as a manufacturing assembly line — usually needs an organized hierarchy of controller systems to function. In this hierarchy there is usually a Human Machine Interface (HMI) at the top, where an operator can monitor or operate the system. This is typically linked to a middle layer of programmable logic controllers (PLC) via a non-time-critical communications system (e.g. Ethernet). At the bottom of the control chain is the fieldbus which links the PLC’s to the components which actually do the work such as sensors, actuators, electric motors, console lights, switches, valves and contactors.

Danfoss VLT Drives has developed a number of fieldbus option modules making it possible for the VLT frequency drives to be part of a fieldbus and communicate with other devices connected to the same bus
Profibus Danfoss VLT Drives

Profibus

Profibus is the world's most successful fieldbus. By utilizing a single-cable ‘bus’ structure, Profibus eliminates hard wiring in the automation of production lines, so design and installation costs can be slashed. Through better control and online diagnostics Profibus enables improved asset management, ensuring lower life cycle costs, better quality and higher productivity.

Danfoss drives was the first drive manufacture to support profibus for more than 17 years ago. Today Profibus covers all automation demands from process automation to motion control and safety.

Profibus (option module MCA 101) is available for the VLT AutomationDrive, HVAC Drive and VLT AQUA Drive.
There is also a Profibus interface available for the VLT 2800 and for the decentral drives FCD 300, FCD 302 and FCM 300.
Profinet Danfoss VLT Drives

Profinet

Profinet has a much broader reach than Profibus and can enable better networking plant-wide. It integrates readily with IT infrastructures and with the Internet. It embraces Profibus and competing fieldbuses so that existing investments in skills and equipment can be retained during any migration to an Ethernet-based future.

By the end of 2008 1.6 million nodes were installed, having a 40% growth rate. Profinet allows a seamless integration to the company’s IT system, thus giving the user a full transparency to the factory floor.

The Profinet option module MCA 120 is available for the VLT AutomationDrive.
CANopen Danfoss VLT Drives

CANopen

High flexibility and low cost are two of the “cornerstones” for CANopen. The CANopen option (MCA 105) for the Auto mationDrive is fully equipped with both high priority access to control and status of the Drive (PDO Communication) and access to all Parameters through acyclic data (SDO Communication).

For interoperability the option has implemented the DSP402 AC drive Profile. This all guarantees standardised handling, interoperability and low cost.

CANopen (option module MCA 105) is available for the VLT AutomationDrive.
Devicenet Danfoss VLT Drives

DeviceNet

The DeviceNet communication module MCA 104 offers robust, efficient data handling thanks to advanced Producer/Consumer technology.

DeviceNet is available for the VLT AutomationDrive, VLT HVAC Drive and VLT AQUA Drive. There is also a DeviceNet interface available for the VLT 2800 and for the decentral drive FCD 300.
EthernetIP Danfoss VLT Drives

Ethernet/IP

EtherNet/IP (Ethernet Industrial Protocol) is an open communications protocol designed for use in process control and other industrial automation applications. EtherNet/IP is an application layer protocol and it considers all the devices on the network as a series of "objects".

EtherNet/IP is built on the standard TCP/IP stack, and makes use of all 7 layers of OSI reference model. Since EtherNet/IP makes use of Ethernet for physical layer, it becomes easier to tightly couple Enterprise Servers with the device data (sensors, actuators, drives, valves etc...).

Ethernet IP is available for the VLT AutomationDrive and the VLT AQUA Drive.
Danfoss VLT Drives Ethercat

EtherCAT

Ethernet for Control Automation Technology is an open high performance Ethernet-based fieldbus system.

The development goal of EtherCAT was to apply Ethernet to automation applications which require short data update times (also called cycle times) with low communication jitter (for synchronization purposes) and low hardware costs.
Powerlink

Powerlink

POWERLINK represents the second generation of fieldbus. The high bit rate of Industrial Ethernet is used and the full power of IT technologies
to the automation world is
available now for the factory world. The POWERLINK interface does support of SDO and PDO communication, which make the migration from CANopen to Ethernet Technology easy, with a minimum change of the PLC program.

For interoperability the interface has implemented the DS402 AC drive Profile. This all guarantees standardised handling, interoperability and low cost.

The POWERLINK (option module MCA 123) is available for the VLT® AutomationDrive , and VLT® Decentral Drive FCD302 only.
LonWorks Danfoss VLT Drives

LonWorks

LonWorks is a fieldbus system developed for building automation. It enables communication between individual units in the same system (peer-to-peer) and thus supports decentralising of control.

The LonWorks option module MCA 108 is available for the VLT HVAC Drive.
